Planetary Boundary Layer Heights from Cruises in Spring to Autumn Chukchi-Beaufort Sea Compared with ERA5

چکیده
The planetary boundary layer height (PBLH) is a diagnostic field related to the effective heat capacity of lower atmosphere, both stable and convective, it constrains motion in this as well impacts surface warming. Here, we used radiosonde data from five icebreaker cruises Chukchi Beaufort Seas during spring fall derive PBLH using bulk Ri method, which were then compared with results ERA5 reanalysis. was similar but slightly than ship observations. Clear consistent seasonal changes found observations reanalysis: decreased mid-May mid-June subsequently increased after August. comparison shows that, besides temperature, biases are also function wind direction, suggesting that availability upwind important representing processes active over Arctic Ocean.

Photobiogeochemical cycling of carbon monoxide in the southeastern Beaufort Sea in spring and autumn
We investigated the distribution, photoproduction, microbial uptake, and air–sea exchange of carbon monoxide (CO), a key photoproduct of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM), in open waters of the southeastern Beaufort Sea in autumn 2003 and spring 2004. Diurnal cycles of surface water CO concentration ([CO]) occurred in autumn but not in spring. In both seasons [CO] was well above air-...
متن کاملEstimating climatological planetary boundary layer heights from radiosonde observations: Comparison of methods and uncertainty analysis
[1] Planetary boundary layer (PBL) processes control energy, water, and pollutant exchanges between the surface and free atmosphere. However, there is no observation‐ based global PBL climatology for evaluation of climate, weather, and air quality models or for characterizing PBL variability on large space and time scales. As groundwork for such a climatology, we compute PBL height by seven met...
متن کاملPlanetary Boundary Layer Turbulence
In previous chapters boundary layers were evident as thin layers across which thermal, dynamic, and material properties of a free interior flow make a transition to their boundary values and/or boundary fluxes. In those cases the thinness of the boundary layer was typically a statement of the smallness of the relevant diffusivity; e.g., the depth h of the laminar Ekman boundary layer scales as ...
متن کاملChlorophyll Response to Shelf-Break Upwelling and Winds in the Chukchi Sea, Alaska, in Autumn
In the Chukchi Sea, autumn 1996 was windier than most of the previous 35 years. Conditions in the Bering Strait were anomalous, with fresh coastal water absent from the Strait and a partial flow reversal apparently occurring. In the central Chukchi Sea, the northeastward flow of the Alaskan Coastal Current was reversed. In the northern Chukchi Sea, upwelling of offshore, high-nutrient upper hal...
